Asian Cosmetic Surgery in Australia

By Tracey Lee

There is an increasing trend toward cosmetic surgery within the Asian community in Australia as it becomes more affordable, more readily available and more accepted. The trend of suffering for beauty is nothing new for many Asian cultures, with practices such as foot binding being common place in the past. The most popular procedure in cosmetic surgery for Asians is double eyelid surgery, but other procedures such as breast enlargements, rhinoplasty and a range of other procedures are becoming increasingly popular.

In some countries such as Japan and Korea, specialist Asian cosmetic surgeons are performing over 100 double eyelid surgeries a year making the procedure almost as popular as mole removal. The eye opening procedure is more common amongst women but is gaining increasing popularity with men as well. The procedure can be performed in three different ways, full incisional, partial incisional or non incisional and depending on the results requested and the technique used, has little or no downtime for the recipient. The procedure can be done under general or local anaesthetic and usually results in a small amount of swelling and occasionally some light bruising.

The most common procedures in Asian cosmetic surgery can arguably be described as aiming towards a more westernised ideal of beauty. This allegation is vehemently denied by both the recipients of surgery and the cosmetic surgeons performing the procedures. As one leading Asian Cosmetic Surgeon said, "If a Caucasian has rhinoplasty to reduce the size of their nose, are they being Asianised?" The surgeon believes that all the procedures he performs are designed to make the most of Asian features, and are not designed to make the patients appear more Caucasian. He said that his clients never show photos of Caucasians when they are describing the ideal outcome of their procedure.

No matter what is the driving factor for Asians to have cosmetic surgery performed, it seems that more and more Asians are being influenced by it and are flocking to have surgery. There are a growing number of specialists in the field of cosmetic surgery for Asians popping up throughout the nation with most of them coming from an Asian background, this allows them to have a better understanding of the wants and desires of their patients.

Other types of surgery becoming popular with Asians include:

* Asian brow lift surgery, which opens the eye and improves the shape and position of the eyebrow.

* Rhinoplasty - to improve the bridge shape, reduce tip and nostril size.

* Breast enhancement - increases breast size.

* Botox and Fillers - to reduce wrinkles and re-shape overly round faces.

* Laser Skin Whitening - to produce tighter, whiter, clearer, brighter skin.

The declining cost of equipment such as cosmetic laser machinery, and the introduction of new less invasive procedures has seen cosmetic surgery become more affordable and with this trend likely to continue, there should be an increase in the growth of the field of specialist cosmetic surgery for Asians.
