Are You Considering Eco Travel?

By Taylor Swans

The definition of ecotourism, as established by the International Ecotourism Society is, "Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well being of local people".

The aims of eco travel encourage a minimal impact when visiting natural destinations and building upon travellers understanding of environmental issues. Eco travel aims to offer direct financial advantages to local conservation projects and financial benefits to local people, whilst offering travellers an insight into the kinds of ways irresponsible travellers can quite easily, have a negative impact on an environment and its local people. This kind of socially responsible travel increases personal growth and a deeper level of appreciation for the relevance of all natural habitats.

Travellers are commonly offered the opportunity to get involved hands on with local conservation projects during their trips. Many individuals are affected so much by their experience that they actually change the way they behave when they return from their trip. By spending time learning about local customs and culture in the places they visit, travellers can see the values that are so incredibly important to others. Finding out about other peoples cultures is extremely enriching and educational.

During any trip, eco tourists are encouraged to use local services and companies in order to put back into the community and support the economic structure. Spending in local shops and food outlets often makes a huge difference to locals who are quite often unable to compete with businesses that are aimed at 'tourists' and may not employ any locals. Respecting local ecosystems, has to include refusing to contribute to harming the environment or adding to a threat to local species by buying any animal of any kind or removing any natural plant or product from its natural environment where it belongs.

Eco travel can provide a life changingexperience in which travellers learn a huge amount about a location and its people. Local guides with in depth knowledge are available with the majority of packages. Once travellers realise the implications of any irresponsible behaviour they are far much more likely to respect their surroundings.

Illegal trading can be encouraged by ignorant tourists and this can damage local ecosystems irreparably.

It is entirely feasible however to visit fragile locations and make a valuable contribution whilst you are there. Through a number of eco packages, a percentage of the package fee is gifted to local worthy projects. Physical participation and donated money is a wonderful advantage to any project. Quite often it becomes a vital lifeline. Eco travel is an ideal solution for people who want to travel with a clear conscience. Through ecotourism you can enjoy an incredible, holiday of a lifetime and do your bit for the planet too.
