By Carla Rossouw

Learning about personal development is the number one way to guarantee you're improving yourself in the best way possible. The world offers you lots of good advice on personal development, so reviewing the tips below and applying them where appropriate is well worth your time.

If you feel you are not making progress, try to see specifically what is keeping you from it. This has proven to be an obstacle for a large number of people. Once you can pinpoint your own weaknesses, it is easier to accept them, act on them, and change them. Your future will look much brighter if you acquire new strengths.

Select one important part of yourself that you would like to improve, and focus on that. There may be multiple things that you would like to improve about yourself, but by limiting your focus to one item at a time, you improve your chances for success. Also, by limiting your focus to one, you allow the change to adjust your personality and become a part of your character. Old habits are hard to break unless you do so slowly and deliberately.

There is nothing wrong with taking a little risk every now and then. When you take risks, you may end up feeling like you've failed or been rejected. But if you just stay in your comfort zone, you will eventually become dissatisfied. Furthermore, taking reasonable risks shows that you are brave. This boost to your self confidence will carry you far!

Use your work time efficiently. Take breaks regularly to stay focused on what you need to work on. If you designate a time to relax, then you will be more willing to buckle down and focus during work periods.

Be sure you're humble. Remember that you are insignificantly small in this universe. You can learn something from everyone you meet. You will have many new opportunities if you understand this concept. Keeping an open mind will create a vacuum through which new ideas and information can flow.

You can learn to control your emotions in a stressful situation. If you stay cool when you're highly stressed, you can gain confidence to deal with many daily problems. Remember to always stop and breathe deeply to regain your poise.

Pick up a pen and paper, and write yourself a positive letter. Write down all of your good characteristics. Keep it with you, and pull it out if you are feeling discouraged. Better yet, videotape yourself reading it aloud and view the video frequently. What are the benefits of this?

Know what your strengths are, and be confident when promoting yourself. Everyone has unique strengths, which helps to make this world a better and more diverse place. Never focus on the skills that you haven't mastered. It is far more productive to look for new opportunities to develop the skills that you naturally possess.

Most employers are more concerned about the degree itself, rather than where it came from. There are only very few exceptions to this rule, such as working with a large financial institution. In most cases though, just getting a four year degree will make all the difference in the world.

Change should be a conscious choice, and is in fact a result of it. You can only change and grow when you openly welcome the changes and choose to evolve.

Find something to read that provides motivation and encouragement. A religious text or a book of inspirational quotes could hold what they are seeking. Knowing that there is some source of encouragement to which you can turn will improve your mental state and make it easier to face life's challenges.

Those who want to succeed often look to mentors for help. All of history's greats had a great coach behind them. Helpful experience is meant to be shared with those who need it. If help isn't available, how can people excel? Everyone who is great at something has had help getting to where they are.

Define and chart your progress meticulously. When you can break down your goals, it becomes much easier to achieve them. A daily planner is an excellent way to track progress for personal goals.

Keep your goals as realistic as possible so you can reach them. When you determine what your weaknesses are, you can address them properly and become a better you.

Don't worry so much. Worrying is simply creating scenarios that have not actually happened (and most of the time will not happen). Put your worries aside by imagining the very worst thing that could happen and developing a plan on how to deal with that situation, should it occur. This gives you a backup plan should things go wrong and also lets you worry about more important things.

Learn what others have done that has made them successful. Pursuing self-fulfillment can benefit all areas of your life, including your abilities as an employee, a partner and as a person. Find out how others have accomplished this. Use the lessons of successful people to inform and inspire your own path to personal development.

Figuring out who you are as a person, aside from how others view you, is a great achievement. Treat yourself with the respect you deserve, don't fool yourself and enjoy spending time working on yourself. In the end, you only have yourself.
